In a commanding Victorian building with great views across the boating lakes and scrubland of this lower section of the Epping Forest, the Hitchcock Inn has impeccable celeb pedigree, what with Alf Hitchcock being an untouchable celluloid hero. But, in what seems to be a theme for the area, the owners do as little as they possibly can to make the most of such assets. The ‘beer garden’ is a small terrace out the back, overlooking the car park, with one or two dilapidated iron chairs to sit on/catch tetanus off. What’s wrong with the front? You’ve only got AN ENTIRE FOREST’S worth of thirsty walkers to lure in for a drink – why not give it a go?

However, the Sunday lunches are a revelation. Housed inside, as well as a surprisingly atmospheric Hitch-themed bar, is a South African restaurant that does stupendous roasts, with the greatest chicken pie you will taste in London. Vegetables do not go down the normal road of boiled carrots/cabbage etc. You will find spiced squash, sautéed courgette, corn on the cob, and many more… Fantastic value, very friendly staff, and an accommodating beast of a chef. Recommended, even if there are a disproportionate amount of dour Afrikaners amongst the clientele.
